"I thought I was the only one I didn't know there were others," she says. For 24 hours, the developers worked with the new companies and nonprofits to design and create what they needed to get off the ground.Īll the coders who attended were black, and half were women.Ĭalvin was surprised when she kept hearing from them. To bring supply to demand, she organized a black "hackathon" in Atlanta last November more than 80 people attended - coders, leaders of new businesses, and consultants. There were not enough reasonably affordable software developers who could create (or code) the products a fledgling enterprise needs, such as interactive websites and mobile apps. My hope is that its “controversial” content inspires us to trust each other-and ourselves-enough to keep sharing.Įngage with Kat Hunt on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Vimeo and her website.Blerdology grew out of an experience that Calvin, founder of a small consulting firm, shared with many other start-up entrepreneurs. It’s been a thrill to stream my film free online, finding new audiences through NoBudge and #DirectedbyWomen, and hearing from people who resonated with its truths. As women, let’s work to make a world where all women are able to speak their truth in safety. The map shows us what must change, and who we trust to make those changes. This isn’t to say we shouldn’t get mad, or that we should shame anger, but that we can use our anger as a map. I believe this movement can do the opposite: that it can feed our integration, with ourselves and with everyone around us, building trust. When we react with outrage, we externalize our power. When we listen to each other with compassion, we create new networks of trust that will grow into cultural mores, and eventually institutions. When we share information and perspective with each other, we empower each other. My hope is that the #MeToo movement will build a world in which we trust each other to share our truths, for women have kept secrets for far too long. It was the same mistrust that I experienced when I began examining the desire for revenge in my film. Many critical reactions to #MeToo have been similar to the reactions to my film-that people sharing #MeToo stories were oblivious to the complexities and the grey area of implication, that many of the stories shared weren’t that bad, or that the whole business of sharing stories was really about drawing attention to one’s self… essentially, that it was irresponsible for women to be talking about this stuff publicly.Īgain, I saw a lack of trust in women to examine our lives, to make our own conclusions about what constitutes misconduct and abuse, and take action as we feel necessary. It’s 2018, and we’ve seen the birth of the #MeToo Movement in which people all over the world have shared their first-hand and wide-ranging experiences of abuse by men in power. The implication was that only certain experiences were worthy of anger and revenge, of drawing cinematic attention to. I was told that my main character “wasn’t positive,” or that What’s Revenge didn’t pass the Bechdel Test (which was first depicted in a comic strip as satire of how pathetic representation in mainstream films was).Īnother response was that the actions of men we were “avenging” in the film weren’t “bad enough.” That we should be talking about rape, not the Dehumanization Lite that we deal with daily. I noticed that programmers of woman-centered film festivals were responding negatively to my film. The next surprise came when I began submitting the film to festivals. ![]() In the end, years of work led to a complex and funny film that I am very proud of. And as a first-time director I struggled with internalizing the criticism, and wondered often if I wasn’t up to it. They told me that people close to them had discouraged them from doing the project, suggesting it might be too “big” a topic to work on, that it might not be the type of film they should make. ![]() I met two other female filmmakers who were doing a similar thing-making a documentary about a neighborhood man they had befriended who they later found out was accused of rape. It surprised me, over and over again, how few people trusted me to make a smart piece of art about this timeless and topical human experience. Rare feedback considered that my project was to examine our emotional responses to a taboo yet universally-felt desire: revenge. They seemed to assume the worst, that I would be pranking people and filming it. Some people loved the idea, while many people thought I was insane, immature, or just stupid. This was apparently a very controversial thing to do. Back in 2012, I launched a Kickstarter campaign for a film about two friends “getting revenge” on men and documenting the process.

![]() Although I cannot concur with some of her beliefs, I still admire how she denied evil or hardship as obstacles but rather the source and motivation for optimism and faith. The brief intermission of her poetry was a little too repetitive for my taste, but the essay on optimism was a much better. The waking dream essay was delightful and fantastic and reminded me of some of my own daydreams. How would a dream without visual cues feel like? I can only imagine and it makes me realize that the blind and the deaf are not the only ones limited in their experiences. I am so used to my visible world, that I 'see' my dreams in action. Would it feel like how the bats can 'see' with their ultrasound waves? or how the ants can see the world with their pheromones? Even more fascinating is how she describes the dream world. As Helen Keller imagines a world of rainbow and music, I try to imagine how her world feels like. Her world may appear dark and silent to the limited 'scope' of our visible world, but in actuality it's full and vibrant of the other sensations we are apt to belittle and ignore. The first part of the book explores the world she lives in, namely the immediate sensations and the inner world of her thoughts and dreams. ![]() I also needed a spark of optimism to get through another year that's already beginning to have quite a burdensome outlook in the offing. I was captured by this introduction and my desire to find out more about this remarkable woman after reading 'The Story of My Life'. until they give me opportunity to write about matters that are not-me, the world must go on uninstructed and unreformed, and I can only do my best with the one small subject upon which I am allowed to discourse." Finally I am requested to write about my dreams, and thus I become an anachronical grandmother for it is the special privilege of old age to relate dreams. Then they make me my own daughter and ask for an account of grown-up sensations. "First they ask me to tell the life of the child who is mother to the woman. In the end, this blind and deaf woman succeeds in sharpening our eyes and ears to the beauty of the world. Keller's celebration of discovery becomes our own. The idea of feeling rather than hearing a sound, or of admiring a flower's motion rather than its color, evokes a strong visceral sensation in the reader, giving The Story of My Life a subtle power and beauty. Sometimes I caught an insect in the flower I was plucking, and I felt the faint noise of a pair of wings rubbed together in a sudden terror. Few know what joy it is to feel the roses pressing softly into the hand, or the beautiful motion of the lilies as they sway in the morning breeze. Indeed, everything that could hum, or buzz, or sing, or bloom, had a part in my education. In her lovingly crafted and deeply perceptive autobiography, Keller's joyous spirit is most vividly expressed in her connection to nature: This method proved a revelation: "That living world awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free! There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers that could in time be swept away." And, indeed, most of them were. ![]() Nevertheless, at the urging of Alexander Graham Bell, Anne Sullivan, a teacher, transformed this wild child at the age of 7 years in an event that she declares "the most important day I remember in all my life." (After a series of operations, Sullivan, once blind, partially recovered her sight.) In a memorable passage, Keller writes of the day "Teacher" led her to a stream and repeatedly spelled out the letters w-a-t-e-r on one of her hands while pouring water over the other. She also helped to start several foundations that continue to improve the lives of the deaf and blind around the world.Īs a young girl, obstinate Keller, prone to fits of violence, seethed with rage at her inability to express herself. An active and effective suffragist, pacifist, and socialist (the latter association earned her a file of Federal Bureau of Investigation), she lectured on behalf of disabled people everywhere. ![]() Nevertheless, alongside many other impressive achievements, Keller authored 13 books, wrote countless articles, and devoted her life to social reform. In this age, few women then attended college, and people often relegated the disabled to the background and spoke of the disabled only in hushed tones, when she so remarkably accomplished. Scarlet fever rendered her deaf and blind at 19 months she in several languages and as a student wrote The Story of My Life. Blind and deaf since infancy, American memoirist and lecturer Helen Adams Keller learned to read, to write, and to speak from her teacher Anne Sullivan, graduated from Radcliffe in 1904, and lectured widely on behalf of sightless people her books include Out of the Dark (1913).Ĭonditions bound not Keller. ![]() It also offers its secure browser through this extension. ![]() However, you can upgrade the browser extension through its settings to blocking all tracking.
